Description
When we were preparing for the leather boxing-making course, a major concern was the difficulty of sewing leather boxes. If you’ve ever tried to make one, you’ll know that boxes don’t easily fit into traditional sewing clams, ponies, or really any jig that holds a piece upright. The issue is that you need to see both sides at the same time. This is because when you look at a leather box edge, you’ll see both the front and the back of the stitch. On other projects like wallets or belts, you can cheat a bit since you can only see one side of the stitch. So, to sew a box properly, you either have to master sewing blind on one side, which takes a very long time, or see both sides of the stitch as you are sewing.
Boxes, Cylinders, and More
This issue of seeing both sides of the stitch is not just limited to boxes but also includes bags, cases, trays, cylinders, and any project where there is depth along three dimensions. In each of these projects, and even in different steps of the same project, you need to manipulate your piece in order to get the ideal position for hand-sewing. For example, a box has stitches on the corners, on the face, on the top, and on the bottom. Each of these seams requires a different position and a different way to hold the piece.
Our Sewing tower is for leather goods makers who need an easier way to hand-sew boxes, cases, and more complex leather projects. Use the Sewing Tower to hold your work in the positions and angles you need.
